A selection of images from 'Windrush: Portrait of a Generation', a photo-essay being exhibited in the Oxo Gallery on London's Southbank (May 23rd - June 10th) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the arrival in Tilbury of the ship 'Empire Windrush' on June 21st 1948. Empire Windrush brought 492 Caribbean migrants, mostly Jamaican men, to the UK and was the start of the wave of migration from the West Indies to the UK which changed the face of Britain.
'Windrush: Portrait of a Generation' comprises twelve 'photo-stories', nearly all in 'black and white', that together encompass the south London lives of these first Caribbean migrants as photographed by Jim Grover. The photo-essay has been curated by Katy Barron, senior Director at Michael Hoppen. The dedicated exhibition web-site, with more content, images and stories is here.
